Nanten was introduced from China during the Heian period and has been valued since ancient times as an herbal medicine for suppressing coughs.

It bears many glossy red berries from late autumn to early winter, and its reading, "nan-ten," is associated with the wish "to turn misfortune into good fortune," making it a popular auspicious tree.

It is also believed to ward off evil when placed at the entrance, preventing negative energy from approaching.

An encyclopedia from the Edo period states that "planting Nanten prevents fires," and it was planted in unfavorable directions in many homes as a "fire ward" to protect the safety of the house.
