Columbia Sportswear
Paul Lamfrom, the founder of Columbia Sportswear Company,
ran a shirt sewing factory in Germany.
In 1938, he immigrated with his family from Germany to Oregon, USA.
To start his business in America, Lamfrom bought the rights to a small hat wholesale company.
He named the company Columbia Hat Company after the Columbia River, which flowed near his office.
Gert Boyle, Lamfrom's second daughter and current chairman,
has supported the family business since she was a teenager.
And Neal Boyle, who later became Gert's husband and president of Columbia,
also joined the Lamfrom family business in 1950.
In 1960, they began producing their own products to further expand the business.
Columbia Hat Company merged with Columbia Manufacturing Company, a ski glove manufacturer,
and changed its name to Columbia Sportswear Company.
