Paul Lamfrom, founder of Columbia Sportswear Company, managed a shirt manufacturing factory in Germany.
In 1938, he emigrated with his family from Germany to Oregon, USA.
When starting his business in America, Lamfrom purchased the rights to a small hat wholesale business.
Named after the Columbia River near the office, the company was called Columbia Hat Company.
Garth Boyle, the current chairperson and Lamfrom's second daughter, supported the family business from her teens.
Later, Garth's husband Neil Boyle, who became Columbia's president, also joined the Lamfrom family business in 1950.
In 1960, to expand further, they began producing their own products.
Columbia Hat Company merged with Columbia Manufacturing Company, a ski glove manufacturer, and renamed itself Columbia Sportswear Company.
