As some of you may know, many new projects at TCB begin with an encounter with a specific vintage piece.In some cases, it starts as a way to "reclaim past longings"—items I stared at through glass windows as a boy, things I only saw in magazines, or special vintage pieces worn by performers on TV.In other cases, such as with "Viktor's Voice," we begin by borrowing special pieces that aren't even found in vintage clothing stores.For this project, I will state upfront: we started without having found the perfect original source material for sampling.What I had on hand were the heart buttons and a pair of MASTER CLOTH overalls from the same era. That is where I began.The reason is simple: it was a jacket I had wanted to make for a long time.The word "Cathartt" had been on my mind for several years.And I knew that if I ever did it, it absolutely had to have heart buttons!
The fabric and the MASTER CLOTH label were referenced from vintage overalls.We used a No. 7 warp yarn with a natural, subtle unevenness, paired with a thinner No. 16 weft yarn, slightly reducing the thread count.By making the weft thinner than the warp, the uneven texture of the warp yarn stands out prominently. This results in a 10oz 2x1 denim fabric that achieves distinct vertical fading (tate-ochi).For the color, we intentionally used 100% synthetic indigo with no additives.The number of dyeing cycles is fewer than that of 1920s XX DENIM, resulting in a brighter blue.
For those who already own TCB chore coats and are wondering about the feel of this fabric:Compared to the Tabby's Jacket, it is slightly softer, though the blue tone is similar.The twill line is easier to see for a 2x1 weave, and the unevenness of the warp yarn is visible to the eye. Therefore, you can expect a rugged, vintage-style fading even compared to the Black Cat Jacket or Tabby's Jacket.
What about the base for the CHORE COAT?I own two vintage Carhartt pieces from the 1940s-50s.While using the silhouette of those chore coats as a base, I referenced various materials to create a 1920s atmosphere that matches the historical context of the MASTER CLOTH label and heart buttons.*(Excerpt from TCB jeans official site)*

The heart button is something I had always wanted to reproduce.I remember a time when you could buy just the buttons at vintage stores for under 10,000 yen, but lately, it has become rare to even see them for sale.Manufacturing is the same; previously, we could make them as long as we met the minimum order quantity.However, nowadays, the number of engravers who can reproduce button designs is decreasing due to retirement and other factors. During the production of these buttons, the supplier actually went out of business, and for a while, the project was stalled—I spent days worrying that we might not be able to make them at all.As I felt with the "Boss Of The CAT Overall," it is becoming increasingly difficult to create truly specialized components.I don't know how much longer we will be able to produce these buttons, but I intend to use them with care.I recently cut my hair, but I usually tie it back, so I'm also looking forward to using one as a concho by passing a hair tie through it.*(Excerpt from TCB jeans official site)*
