A collaborative work by Saarinen and Eames, the "Organic Chair" is a masterpiece by Eero Saarinen. It was exhibited in the MoMA's "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition in 1940 as a joint work by Saarinen and Charles Eames, and was selected for first prize. Structurally challenging leg attachments and curved surfaces designed with molded plywood are covered with fabric, achieving a soft shape and comfortable seating. The base of the legs is reinforced with a rational method using metal fittings similar to the "Onikoroshi" joinery, which is familiar in Japanese solid wood chair construction. The Organic Chair has a taste that sits perfectly between the currently popular Nordic interior style and Mid-Century Modern, making its design adaptable to both styles. The Organic Chair is a collaboration between Eames and Saarinen, and is said to be the prototype for the Shell Chair.
