The Next Generation Bonsai Pot, Infused with the Techniques of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki
Heian Senzan
At the foot of Sennyu-ji Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto, a place where master craftsmen have gathered and nurtured the culture of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki since ancient times, stands the kiln "Touan," founded in 1922. "Heian Senzan" is an original bonsai pot born from the fusion of the techniques of its fourth-generation master craftsman and the specialized perspective of KINBON, which has been producing bonsai pots for many years.
It is extremely rare for a Kiyomizu-yaki kiln, a traditional Kyoto craft, to seriously produce bonsai pots. This series, born from such an endeavor, combines beauty and practicality not found in conventional bonsai pots.
■ High-Temperature Firing Achieves Both Beauty and Strength
Fired at approximately 1,200 degrees Celsius, distinguishing it from ordinary ceramic pots.
This achieves high strength and durability.
While vibrant colors are generally difficult to achieve with high-temperature firing, unique glazes developed through years of research allow for the preservation of Kyo-yaki's elegant colors, along with scratch resistance.
■ Choose from 3 Types of Glazes in a Total of 5 Colors (Each with a Unique, One-of-a-Kind Appearance)
・Hanakessho (Flower Crystal)
An original glaze by Touan's fourth-generation master, Yoshiaki Tsuchibuchi.
Characterized by flower-petal-like, rounded crystal patterns formed under extremely delicate firing conditions with a temperature difference of only ±3°C.
No two patterns are alike, offering a special, one-of-a-kind appearance even in a mass-produced item.
・Hoshikessho (Star Crystal)
An original glaze by Touan's fourth-generation master, Yoshiaki Tsuchibuchi.
A fantastical glaze where tungsten-derived crystals spread like stars, emitting an iridescent sheen.
Its appearance changes with light and angle, creating a deep, scenic view within the pot.
It's also appealing for its ability to offer a texture similar to expensive Tenmoku glaze at a realistic price point.
・Kessho-yu (Crystal Glaze)
A natural landscape woven by crystals using traditional Kyo-yaki techniques.
It evokes a sense of depth while maintaining a calm presence, enhancing the charm of the tree.
■ Design: Hexagonal Pot for Semi-Cascade and Cascade Styles
A hexagonal pot suitable for semi-cascade and cascade styles of authentic small bonsai. The sharp form composed of facets tightens the flow of the tree and accentuates the three-dimensional branching. It is a highly practical shape that balances stability with the expression of movement.
This pot beautifully complements the composition while highlighting the main subject, the tree.
■ Practicality Recognized by Professionals
・Used in top-class exhibitions such as the Miyabi-fu Exhibition.
・Possesses the dignity to accommodate renowned small bonsai trees.
・Can be used for a wide range of trees, from finished specimens to raw material and cultivation trees.
It is used by bonsai professionals and can be chosen with confidence by beginners and veterans alike.
■ Value Beyond Its Price
Despite its advanced techniques and expressive power, it is available for under 10,000 yen.
This is extremely rare for a Kyo-yaki or Kiyomizu-yaki piece, making its high cost performance a significant attraction.
■ Awards and Media Features
・Awards
Received the highest award, the "Gold Prize," in the glaze category at the 16th Contemporary Small Pot Artist Exhibition (January 2021).
Its advanced firing techniques and unique glaze expressions were highly acclaimed.
・Media Features
Featured in the NHK World TV program "CORE KYOTO" (aired January 2026).
It was highlighted as a new trend in bonsai within Kyoto's 1200-year history,
drawing attention for its presence and innovation as a "modern Heian Tofuku-ji."

■ A "Vessel" That Enhances the Charm of Bonsai
In bonsai, the pot is not merely a container but a crucial element that completes the scene.
"Heian Senzan" enhances the individuality of the tree while elevating the overall quality of the work.
From everyday bonsai to exhibition specimens.
A high-quality bonsai pot that you can enjoy for a long time.
