The FLASH Kansai Railway Map iPhone Case features a single red LED mounted at Osaka Station that lights up without a battery.The LED glows by converting the radio waves emitted by the iPhone itself into electricity and boosting the voltage. It does not light up under normal conditions but activates when strong radio waves are emitted. Because it reacts to the iPhone's radio waves, the lighting is random.It is more likely to light up when using data-intensive apps like Google Maps or other map applications, or when the iPhone is searching for location information in elevators or underground areas.
The mechanism works via an antenna circuit on the back of the board that catches the weak radio waves emitted by the iPhone and transfers them to the front of the board. An amplification circuit is built into the front surface, increasing the voltage and current to light the LED.The circuit that lights an LED without a battery was patented in 2020 (Patent No. 6667777).

A 2mm red LED is mounted at Osaka Station, 2mm resistors at 14 major stations, 1.6mm resistors at 27 high-traffic stations, a 1.6mm capacitor at Esaka Station (where the PCB ART moeco factory is located), and 1mm electronic components at 173 other transfer stations. Electronic components are mounted at a total of 216 stations.The map covers as far west as Akashi Station, south to Wakayama Station, and east to Kyoto Station and Kameyama Station in Mie Prefecture. A large ship floats in Osaka Bay. Railway station names are represented by three characters in white silk-screen printing (e.g., OSK for Osaka).

After the electronic components are mounted, each case is individually hand-coated with resin in a cleanroom (Class 1000) until the surface tension is full to protect the components.
