Columbia Sportswear / Columbia Sportswear

Founder Paul Lamfrom of Columbia Sportswear Company managed a shirt sewing factory in Germany.
In 1938, he migrated with his family from Germany to Oregon, USA.
When starting his business in America, Lamfrom bought the rights to a small hat wholesale business.
Named after the Columbia River near his office, he named the company Columbia Hat Company.
Lamfrom's second daughter, current chairperson Gert Boyle, supported the family business from her teens.
Later, Gert's husband Neil Boyle, who became Columbia's president, also participated in the family business from 1950.
In 1960, to expand further, they began producing their own products.
Columbia Hat Company merged with Columbia Manufacturing Company, a ski glove manufacturer, and renamed itself Columbia Sportswear Company.
