The Omegaverse, a longstanding genre in Western fanfiction, has surprisingly made its way into the mainstream audience in the form of anime. Who would have imagined that a genre known for its explicit themes would give rise to such a wholesome series?

Anime has long been a medium that pushes boundaries, explores diverse narratives, and brings unique genres to mainstream audiences. "Tadaima, Okaeri," a heartwarming Boys' Love (BL) anime, takes this tradition a step further by venturing into the Omegaverse—a subgenre often associated with more mature and controversial themes—and transforming it into a touching story about family, love, and societal acceptance.

Before delving into the specifics of Tadaima, Okaeri, it's essential to understand the Omegaverse, a genre that originated from Western fanfiction, particularly within the "Supernatural" fandom and has since become popular in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean BL fiction. In  Omegaverse, society is divided into three secondary genders: Alphas, Betas, and Omegas. Alphas are typically depicted as the dominant and superior gender, capable of impregnating both male and female individuals carrying the Omega-type gene. Omegas, on the other hand, are seen as the weaker and often more submissive gender, capable of becoming pregnant regardless of their primary gender. Betas are the most common and are usually portrayed as ordinary humans without the special attributes of Alphas or Omegas.

The dynamics within the Omegaverse often include themes of power imbalance, societal prejudice, and the concept of "fated mates," where Alphas and Omegas have a natural, almost mystical bond. This genre allows for unique storytelling opportunities, particularly in exploring same-sex relationships and the fantasy of male pregnancy. However, it also brings with it challenges of addressing and representing the inherent societal prejudices and discrimination.

The Story

Tadaima, Okaeri centers on the Fujiyoshi family: househusband Masaki Fujiyoshi, his Alpha spouse Hiromu, their young son Hikari, and their youngest daughter Hinata.  Moving to a new neighborhood for a fresh start, the Fujiyoshi family faces the daily challenges of societal prejudice due to Masaki's status as an Omega. Despite being an Alpha and thus perceived as a member of the superior secondary gender, Hiromu's relationship with Masaki is frowned upon by many, including his own family, because of the societal norms that view Omegas as inferior.

The anime showcases their journey of creating a loving and accepting home for their children while navigating the prejudices that come with their secondary genders. As they settle into their new home, the family quickly befriends their neighbor, Yuuki Hirai, a lonely college student who becomes attached to little Hikari. Hiromu's childhood friend and coworker, Tomohiro "Matsu" Matsuo, also provides support, making the Fujiyoshis feel more at home.

Navigating Societal Prejudices

Hiromu and Masaki are subjected to societal pressures and prejudices, which the series treats carefully. Masaki, an Omega, has faced discrimination his entire life, including from his own parents, who pitied him because of his secondary gender. Despite the stigma of being with an Omega, Hiromu's love and loyalty remain unwavering. This dynamic is beautifully depicted through their interactions and the care they provide for their son, Hikari.

In one episode, Masaki pays a visit to Hiromu's office and was treated with awkwardness when his Omega status was exposed. This experience demonstrates the widespread discrimination that Omegas face, even in seemingly simple exchanges. However, Hiromu's unwavering support reassures Masaki, underscoring the strength of their bond.

The series also addresses Masaki's internal struggles. As an Omega, Masaki grapples with feelings of inadequacy and societal pressure. His road to self-acceptance is both heartbreaking and inspiring, depicting a real struggle against deeply rooted prejudices.

Tadaima, Okaeri shines in its portrayal of a loving, unconventional family. Hiromu and Masaki's relationship defies societal norms, especially considering the prevalent discrimination against Omega-Alpha pairings. The anime delves into the couple's journey, emphasizing their deep bond and the strength they draw from each other.

Challenges Faced by Omegas

In the series, the struggles of Omegas are depicted with a realistic and empathetic approach. Masaki's experience as the only Omega in his household and the pity he faced from his parents are significant aspects of his character development. The series does not shy away from showing the discrimination and hardships that come with being an Omega in a society that devalues them.

While the series is set in Omegaverse, it takes a unique approach by focusing more on family relationships than on the more sensational aspects of the genre. Secondary genders, heats, and ruts are mentioned, but they serve as background elements rather than central plot points—except for one episode involving Mochizuki, the Omega father of Hikari’s friend Michiru.

One of the reasons why Hiromu was able to hold himself well was because he was already mates with Masaki. A bite mark on one’s nape usually signifies that a person has already been claimed or has a mate.

Mochizuki is about to go into heat—a period where Omegas emit strong pheromones that can trigger natural responses in Alphas—when he formally meets Hiromu. Being an alpha, Hiromu reacted to the omega’s pheromones against his will. This moment highlights the biological and societal challenges that Omegas and Alphas face and it also showcases Hiromu's respect and love for Masaki as he consciously avoids any actions that could cause harm or discomfort to his husband.

The Importance of Support Systems

The Fujiyoshi family, as well as Yuuki and Matsuo, are the usual set of characters we have in each episode.

A key theme in the series is the importance of having a strong support system. Hiromu and Masaki are not alone in their journey; they have friends and neighbors who offer unconditional love and acceptance. This support network plays a crucial role in helping them navigate the challenges they face as a non-traditional family.

The series also emphasizes the impact of community and friendship. Yuuki Hirai's initially reluctant friendship with Hikari blossoms into a meaningful relationship, illustrating how connections can be formed in unexpected ways. Similarly, Tomohiro "Matsu" Matsuo's steadfast support for Hiromu and Masaki highlights the importance of having allies who stand by you, regardless of societal norms.

A Refreshing Take on the Omegaverse

Tadaima, Okaeri is refreshing in its approach to the Omegaverse genre. While many Omegaverse narratives focus on darker themes and exploitative dynamics, this anime prioritizes love, family, and acceptance. It offers a hopeful perspective, showing that even in a world with ingrained prejudices, it is possible to find happiness and build a loving family.

The series also breaks away from the typical tropes of the genre. Instead of focusing on the erotic aspects of heats and pheromones, it highlights the emotional and relational aspects of the characters' lives. This shift in focus allows for a more nuanced exploration of the characters' experiences and the challenges they face.

For viewers unfamiliar with the Omegaverse genre, the series may require some background knowledge to fully appreciate the nuances of the secondary gender system, though it's something a quick Google search and a trip to the Omegaverse tag of Archive of Our Own can easily fix. However, its emphasis on family relationships and emotional depth make it accessible and enjoyable for a broad audience, making it a must-watch for fans of BL and slice-of-life anime alike.
