Introduction

Exploring an RPG-inspired culinary world might not be entirely unique, considering last year's isekai cooking anime Campfire Cooking in Another World With My Absurd Skill. However, what if the focus shifted from typical food to the daring act of cooking monsters? And does "Dungeon Meshi" remain a cooking anime throughout? Let's delve into this delectable adventure and find out!

Series Overview

"Dungeon Meshi," also known as "Delicious in Dungeon," is a fantastic comedy seinen manga created by Ryoko Kui. Serialized in Enterbrain's Harta magazine starting in 2014, this culinary adventure concluded in September 2023 after 97 chapters and 14 volumes. An anime adaptation started this January 2024, slated for 24 episodes—that’s two courses worth of monster cuisine that you absolutely don’t wanna miss.

Set in a fantasy world of dungeon exploration, guilds go on expeditions to raid dungeons in search of the elusive Golden Kingdom, which is said to be the ultimate treasure hidden within a sunken island dungeon. The story begins with human knight Laios Touden and his team narrowly escaping a Total Party Kill thanks to Laios' sister, Falin, who sacrifices herself to transfer them to safety. Falin is now locked in the belly of a Red Dragon, and her digestion is near, forcing Laios and his companions to return to the dungeon to retrieve her remains. The issue is that time and resources are limited, so they use the dungeon's environment to prepare the monsters into delicious dungeon-sourced meals.

More Than Just A Cooking Series

At its core, Dungeon Meshi is more than just a culinary escapade. Initially, the series leans towards a comedic focus on consuming monsters—and this might not immediately captivate every reader. You may even find the beginning a bit dull. However, persistence pays off as the narrative takes a captivating turn as you go further through the series, evolving from a comedy into a full-fledged adventure that solidified its place as one of the best next gen fantasy series in anime and manga. Add the fact that this is one of those rare pure fantasy series of recent times that aren't isekai, which makes it even better.

The series’ charm lies in its meticulous world-building, centered around the dungeon that serves as the backdrop for the group's journey. Ryoko Kui pays close attention to detail, diving into monster ecology and physiology as well as dungeon mechanics, sustenance, and even fanciful politics. This world-building not only improves the setting, but it also plays an important part in the story development, resulting in an immersive experience without overwhelming the audience with unnecessary information.

Narratively, Dungeon Meshi strikes a delicate balance between humor and seriousness as the series progresses. The story seamlessly transitions between funny and intense moments, maintaining a touch of humor even in the most perilous situations. The series also emphasizes the value of self-care, with people putting their own well-being first in order to help others. Within the dungeon's ecosystem, ethical and moral issues are explored, adding depth to the storyline.

Comedy is one of the strengths of the series.

The artistic aspects are outstanding, giving a diverse selection of designs that are expertly constructed to be easily recognized and remembered. The author's artistic progress is astounding. What was great at the start becomes even more sophisticated as the series proceeds. The character drawings become more complex as the story progresses, exhibiting technical mastery. The elaborate and intricate backgrounds, as well as the page design, are visually appealing. The usage of facial expressions is excellent, effectively conveying emotions to readers. In addition, the author produces supplementary sketches of characters in various attire, haircuts, and races, highlighting the uniqueness of each design as well as the author's enthusiasm for the fictional universe.

The cast of characters in Dungeon Meshi is exceptional, each character meticulously crafted with distinct ideologies that contribute to captivating dynamics among them. Character development is subtly woven into the story, revealed through actions rather than explicit verbal explanations. The result is a set of characters that feel relatable, genuine, and convincing in their growth.

Dungeon Meshi has left a lasting impression on many readers and anime watchers alike. Fans frequently tell stories about their first reservations and several attempts to start the series. Those who persevere are rewarded with a distinct twist on the genre, combining inventive problem-solving with engaging and comic cooking sequences. The series fluidly transitions between humorous and darker philosophical parts, resulting in a well-rounded and interesting narrative.

The soul of Dungeon Meshi is captured in the moments between combat, when the story shifts to a fantasy slice-of-life. The party's fondness for cooking and eating monsters results in amusing and humorous cookery sequences, which provide a welcome respite from the intensity of combat. These moments not only provide entertainment, but also help to develop a distinct party dynamic, complete with running gags and personalities that run deeper than initially suspected.
