One part shoujo romance, one part isekai. What do you get? The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent. Not your average isekai anime, Cristy finds out if it's worth watching.

Introduction

What happens when you combine two of anime's most popular subgenres: shoujo romance and isekai? What else but a fantastic fantasy anime like Seijo no Maryoku wa Bannou Desu, commonly known as The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent? Despite earning less attention than some of the other shows in its season, this series stands out as one of the greatest, presenting a character-driven and grounded fantasy plot that captivates its viewers week after week.

The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent, or “Seijo” for short, began its journey as a web serial novel written by Yuki Tachibana in 2016. Later, it was published as a series of light novels with illustrations by Yasuyuki Syuri. The manga adaptation, drawn by Fujiazuki, followed suit, and eventually, an anime adaptation by Diomedea aired during the Spring 2021 season, with a second season airing in Fall 2023. The series is licensed by Kadokawa Books, with the official English translations of both the light novels and manga handled by Seven Seas Entertainment.

Not Your Average Isekai Story

At first glance, Seijo might seem like your typical isekai story, but it quickly sets itself apart from the genre's usual tropes. Instead of a generic overpowered male protagonist with a harem and flashy battles, we follow Sei Takanashi, an average Japanese salarywoman, who finds herself in an unexpected situation after a long day of work. A circle of light appears beneath her, and with a flash, she is transported to a medieval European castle. Surrounded by robed priests, knights, and cheering aristocrats, she learns that she was part of a ritual to summon a "Saint" – a powerful magician tasked with defeating monsters and purifying the miasma threatening the kingdom of Salutania.

Sei gets swallowed by a bright flash of light and in an instant, she finds herself in another world.

However, a twist occurs as another girl, Aira Misono, is also summoned alongside Sei. This unexpected turn complicates matters, leading to uncertainty about who the real Saint is. Prince Kyle Salutania, undeterred by the confusion, immediately chooses Aira as the Saint. This sets the stage for Sei to find her place in this new world, free from the stress of her previous life.

Sei meets Aira for the first time when they get summoned as a Saint.

With no way to return home and feeling guilty about the incident, the kingdom decides to let both Sei and Aira stay in the castle. Sei, having no access to modern entertainment, discovers an herb garden and, with her past knowledge of herbalism, becomes involved in potion-making and herb studies. Unbeknownst to everyone, Sei possesses overwhelming magical power, leading to groundbreaking innovations in potion-making.

A Mix of Romance, Fantasy and Slice of Life

One of the notable strengths of Seijo lies in its character interactions. The show introduces a cast of likable characters, each with unique traits and personalities. Sei's journey from an unfamiliar outsider to a valued member of the kingdom is accompanied by meaningful relationships. Commander Albert "Ice Knight" Hawke, director Johan Valdec, trainer Jude, and Grand Magus Yuri Drewes are just a few characters who contribute to the richness of Sei's new life.

What sets Seijo apart is its slower-paced narrative and focus on character interactions rather than action-packed sequences. The story unfolds as Sei gradually works her way up the social hierarchy, becoming the highest-level magician in the land. The series draws comparisons to Ascendance of a Bookworm, as both share a similar pacing and emphasis on character development within a small, intimate setting.

Romantic elements are delicately woven into the narrative, striking a balance between subtlety and obvious affection. Sei's relationships with the male characters, particularly Commander Hawke, add a layer of emotional depth to the story. The slow-paced romance complements the overall tone of the series, making it more endearing.

The romance in Seijo is subtle yet palpable. If you enjoyed the romantic elements in Ascendance of a Bookworm, you'll find a similar charm in Sei's journey. The show strikes a balance between drama and organic character interactions, creating a unique and enjoyable viewing experience.

Defying The Familiar Isekai Tropes

While Seijo may lack constant action, it compensates with exceptional character design and animation. The attractive character models and gorgeous background art contribute to the overall visual appeal, showcasing the series' artistic prowess.

One notable aspect of Seijo is its avoidance of typical isekai clichés. Instead of relying on fan service or overpowered protagonists, the series emphasizes character development, interpersonal relationships, and the protagonist's contributions to the fantasy world. Sei's journey from an overworked salarywoman to a respected figure in Salutania showcases her resilience and adaptability.

The anime successfully captures the essence of Yuki Tachibana's source material, delivering a heartwarming and charming narrative. The combination of a well-written story, likable characters, and a unique take on the isekai genre contributes to the show's overall success.
