The fire-starting tools frequently used in period dramas are a part of Japanese culture.
They are used in traditional Japanese rituals to ward off evil and bad luck.
As a sacred implement, flint stones were used in Shinto rituals at shrines to produce fire with a fire drill, creating what was called "Kiri Fire" (cutting fire). This process was simplified by striking a fire striker against flint, igniting fire on people or objects to purify them.
Even today, striking flint stones and praying for safety and peace is widely practiced among the entertainment industry, artists, performers, people involved in competitions, those engaged in dangerous work, and shops wishing for prosperity.
Usage Method:When using as a sacred tool to strike fire on people or objects, hold the flint stone in your right hand and the fire striker (metal) in your left hand.Gently and vigorously strike the edge of the fire striker against the corner of the flint stone, shaving off a thin layer to produce sparks.
*Note:* If the corners of the flint become rounded, sparks will no longer fly.In that case, carefully shave the edges to restore sharp corners.*Be sure to keep your eyes protected from flying fragments.*
Below is the proper method for using a traditional fire striker:(Quoted from Yoshii Honke HP: https://yosiihonke-hiuchi.jimdo.com/)
Hold the fire sickle (kama) firmly and nearly horizontally in your left hand.
Select the serrated edge of the flint stone and strike it strongly against the edge of the fire sickle, sliding it to shave off a thin layer.
Sparks will fly toward the target to be purified in front.
Typically, strike 2-3 times with a "kachi kachi" sound to ward off evil spirits.
This method of striking is slightly more difficult than igniting with a fire drill, but once accustomed, it becomes easy.
*Note:* If you are left-handed, hold the tools in the opposite manner.
Method for igniting fire with flint:Hold the flint stone in your left hand and strike it with the fire sickle (metal) in your right hand with a "kachi" sound. The key to producing sparks is to slightly and strongly scrape the serrated edge of the fire sickle against the flint, creating a quick "kachi" sound.
Simply hitting the stone against the metal will only chip the stone and will not produce sparks.*Note:* Left-handed users should reverse the grip.
1. Place a small piece of tinder (such as cotton or fire-starting material) on top of the flint.2. Strike the flint with the fire sickle to produce sparks that land on the tinder, igniting it.3. The tinder will begin to smolder and spread.4. Gently blow on the smoldering tinder to strengthen the fire.
Once the tinder starts burning, place a piece of sulfur-treated wood (sulfur match) nearby and blow to transfer heat and strengthen the flame. When the sulfur wood ignites, the process is successful.
**Caution!**When sulfur ignites, a strong gas is released briefly.Do not bring your face close to the sulfur wood during ignition!
This method can be used to light candles, stoves, fire pits, or campfires.
