Fire-starting tools, often used in period dramas, are a part of Japanese culture.
It is an ancient Japanese custom for warding off evil spirits and impurities.
Flint as a purification tool was simplified from the practice in Shinto rituals at shrines, where fire was produced using a mortar and pestle and used as pure "kiribi" (cut fire). This evolved into striking flint and a fire striker together, and scattering sparks onto people and objects to purify them.
Even today, striking flint when going out is widely practiced among geisha, entertainers, artists, those involved in competitions, those in dangerous professions, and shops wishing for business prosperity, as a way to pray for safety and peace and to bring good luck.
How to useWhen using as a purification tool to strike people or objects, hold the flint in your right hand and the fire striker in your left. Firmly strike the flint against the curved edge of the fire striker, scraping off a thin layer from the corner of the flint, and scatter sparks.
If the corners of the flint become rounded, sparks will not fly.In that case, please sharpen the stone to create corners. Please be very careful to avoid getting stone fragments in your eyes when doing so.
The following is how to use a professional fire striker. How to use Kiribi(Quoted from Yoshii Honke HP https://yosiihonke-hiuchi.jimdo.com/)
Hold the flint scythe firmly in your left hand, almost horizontally.
Choose a blade-like part of the flint and strike it strongly against the edge of the flint scythe, as if scraping it.
Sparks will fly towards the object to be purified in front of you.
Normally, striking 2-3 times is done to ward off evil spirits.
The striking method is a bit more difficult than for starting a fire, but it becomes easy once you get used to it.
If your left hand is dominant, hold it in the opposite way.
Starting a fire with flint
Strike the flint held in your left hand against the flint scythe (metal fitting) in your right hand with a "kachi-n" sound, as if rubbing it. The trick to producing sparks is to strike the edge of the metal fitting against the blade-like part of the stone with a little force for a moment, as if scraping it.
Simply hitting the stone against the metal fitting will only chip the stone and will not produce sparks. If you are left-handed, hold it in the opposite way.
① Place tinder (flammable cotton) on the flint and ignite it.
The sparks from the strike will fly to the tinder and ignite it.
The sparks will burn and spread.
For beginners, place a slightly larger amount of well-dried tinder on the stone, about 2-3 mm away from the edge where you will strike. Lightly press it with your thumb to keep it from moving. Once ignited by the sparks from the flint scythe, gently blow on it to increase the flame.
② Once it starts to burn and spread, bring the sulfur-coated part of the kindling to it and blow on it to strengthen the flame and transfer heat.
The kindling will now start to burn. You have succeeded at this point.
Caution!
A strong gas is momentarily generated when the sulfur begins to burn, so do not bring your face close to the kindling!
This can be used to light candles, stoves, firewood, and campfires.
