What is Yamanaka lacquerware?Yamanaka lacquerware is lacquerware produced in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture. Historical records date back to the Tensho era (late 1500s). Located near Wajima, a major lacquerware production area, and also close to consumer markets like Osaka and Kyoto, it developed into a production center for lacquerware for the general public. It is particularly renowned as the top producer of wood-turned items in Japan, and is also active in supplying wood-turned materials to Wajima and other production areas. Advanced techniques such as *maki-e* (gold lacquer decoration) have been introduced from Aizu, Kyoto, and Kanazawa, and tea ceremony utensils continue to be produced.In addition to traditional lacquerware, Yamanaka lacquerware has also been an early adopter of technological innovations in materials and coatings, such as synthetic resins and urethane. Various further experiments are ongoing even today.Many of the works feature pop designs that are practical and blend into daily life, rather than being ornate and lavish. They can be described as lacquerware that can be used daily, supported by the techniques of traditional crafts.
