[World Cultural Heritage and National Treasure Himeji Castle]
The first fortification on the grounds of Mount Hime was said to have been built during the Kenkyū era (1333) in the era of the Akamatsu clan. Since then, 13 clans and 48 generations have served as castle lords, and it has remained free from the chaos of war until today.
After the Akamatsu clan, as an important base for governing the western provinces, the castle was expanded with the hopes of Hideyoshi Hashiba, Terumasa Ikeda, and Tadakatsu Honda. The complete form seen today was established in the third year of Genna (1617), when the turbulent times settled down.
Himeji Castle, designated as a National Treasure, was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in December 1993 (Heisei 5), alongside Horyu-ji Temple in Nara, Japan's first castle to receive this designation.
The site, including the castle town, covers an area approximately 950 to 1,600 meters east-west, 900 to 1,700 meters north-south, with a perimeter of about 4,200 meters and a total area of 230 hectares.
