[Synopsis]
This is the first film in two and a half years since Ken Takakura returned to his former studio, Toei, after sweeping the first Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Actor for "The Yellow Handkerchief" and "Mount Hakkoda," along with numerous other film awards.
Hideji Kano, who killed his senior yakuza boss out of obligation, is imprisoned at Asahikawa Prison. What weighs on his mind is the existence of Yoko, the 3-year-old daughter of the man he killed. Kano pretends to be her uncle living in Brazil and continues to correspond with and send gifts to Yoko as she grows up through his subordinate. This becomes Kano's sole source of joy and emotional support. Fifteen years pass, and Kano is released. He follows Yoko, now a high school student, as she walks home from school, feeling as if he's meeting a lover, but he cannot reveal his identity. He resolves to live an honest life and watch over Yoko from afar, but...
The original screenplay, written by So Kuramoto, who deepened his friendship with Ken Takakura through the TV drama "Aniki," is brought to life by master director Yasuo Furuhata, who has helmed many of Takakura's films. Renowned guitarist Claude Ciari handles the film's music for the first time, with a score based on Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto powerfully enhancing the climax. Supported by a cast of supporting actors, this masterpiece depicts the melancholy of a man, played by Ken Takakura, living by the code of the yakuza.
