Ships within 1-5 business days: What is Western Electric (WE)?
Around 1900 to 1920, movies were shown without dialogue or music (referred to as "silent" films), relying solely on visuals. However, starting with the 1926 release of the film "Don Juan" and the following year’s "The Jazz Singer," the era changed dramatically. This marked the beginning of the "talkie" era, where synchronized sound and images became standard.
The development of this technology was led by Western Electric (WE). The theater sound systems used were models developed and manufactured by WE, such as the "555" receiver and "15-A" horn system introduced in this book’s "Western Electric Sound Part-1, 2," as well as the "8," "9," and "10" amplifiers, and the "41," "42," and "43" amplifiers.
In the realm of music recording, the "electric recording method" was developed in 1925, utilizing microphones, amplifiers, and recording machines. Prior to this, acoustic recording methods used large horns for sound capture (horn blowing). This was also a groundbreaking technology developed by WE. Thanks to this innovation, the sound quality of records improved dramatically, enabling the production of high-quality records for music fans worldwide.
Thus, Western Electric (WE) was a pioneer that built the foundation of today’s film and music/audio worlds, consistently remaining at the pinnacle of technological advancement. It is a rare manufacturer that has continually led the industry.
This book, "Western Electric Sound," is a deluxe hardcover publication originally issued in 2005 titled "WESTERN ELECTRIC SOUND" (a two-volume set: main text + reference materials, priced at 70,000 yen before tax). It provides detailed information not only on WE speakers but also on amplifiers, vacuum tubes, and visits to passionate WE users, as well as the history of WE. The content has been divided into separate volumes by category (such as speakers, amplifiers) and released sequentially. Please note that the layout has been completely redesigned from the original edition due to differences in book size. While the original was printed in monochrome (excluding user visit pages), this edition features beautiful color photographs of the products, taken independently by our company.
The first volume of this divided edition, released last December, was Part 1 [Speaker Edition]. The current release, Part 2 [Amplifier Edition], is the second installment.
In "Western Electric Sound Part-2 [Amplifier Edition]," as detailed in the [Main Article Content] below, we thoroughly examine WE’s representative theater amplifiers such as the "8-A," "9-A," and "10-A" models introduced in 1921, as well as the famous "41," "42," and "43" amplifiers, and the "86" and "91" amplifiers. We also cover consumer amplifiers like the "7-A," "25-B," and "34-A/B." The book features beautiful color photographs from multiple angles, detailed circuit diagrams, explanatory illustrations, and patent diagrams to provide comprehensive insights.
