"Kokeshi dolls" are traditional wooden dolls from the Tohoku region.There are mainly three categories:- Traditional Kokeshi: A traditional craft that has continued for over 160 years. There are 12 lineages, each named after its place of origin. Kokeshi craftsmen, after several years of training under a master, can create kokeshi belonging to their lineage.- New Type Kokeshi: Kokeshi that began to be made in the 1950s as souvenirs from hot spring resorts and other tourist destinations. There are many designs, featuring motifs such as the names of tourist attractions, landscapes, and local specialties.- Creative Kokeshi: There are no specific rules or definitions, so there are diverse designs.
"Traditional Kokeshi," in particular, were children's toys before the advent of manufactured goods.
