Koyasan, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," is depicted in vivid colors representing the four seasons. Koyasan has a history of over 1,200 years since its founding by Kobo Daishi Kukai at the beginning of the Heian period.
This work captures the four seasons of Koyasan throughout the year, from the extremely cold winter depicted in ink wash painting style to the colorful autumn.
- In the snow-covered Konpon Daito of Danjo Garan, a three-dimensional mandala is represented with Vairocana Buddha at the center.
- At the Jizo Hall, esoteric Buddhist Goma fire rituals are performed, where people's prayers turn into flames and smoke rising into the sky.
- Early in the morning, a live offering called "Namagami" is continuously performed at Okunoin for Kobo Daishi, who is in eternal meditation.
In spring, the mountain is decorated with full-bloom cherry blossoms, and at the foot of Kongo Sanmaiin, double weeping cherry trees gently welcome visitors.
- The main hall hosts the strict ritual "Garden Ritual Mandala Offering."
- Around the Obon season in summer, cut glass lanterns welcome ancestral spirits, and the unique chanting of the "Fudan Kyo" sutra echoes throughout the mountain.
- During autumn, the entire area of Koyasan turns vibrant with colorful leaves, creating a stunning scene against the blue sky. The contrast of the clear air, autumn foliage, and ancient temples captivates visitors.
