Utsunomiya Light Rail Co., Ltd. operates the line as a track operator, called the Utsunomiya Haga Light Rail Line (Light Line).
This line connects Utsunomiya Station East Exit in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, with Haga/Takanezawa Industrial Park in Haga Town, Haga District, Tochigi Prefecture.
Operations began on August 26, 2023. It is the first new tram line in Japan in 75 years, and the first time a tram has been established in a city without previous tram services, making it a domestic first.

The introduced LRT (Next-Generation Tram System) is an abbreviation of "Light Rail Transit," which features excellent characteristics such as integration with various modes of transportation, low-floor vehicles (LRV), and improved tracks and stops for easy boarding and alighting.

The Light Line runs comfortably not only alongside cars but also on dedicated tracks used exclusively by LRT, which accounts for over 35% of the entire route.
The route offers spectacular scenery that changes rapidly, including the main street around Utsunomiya Station, new apartment districts, shopping malls, rural landscapes, the majestic Kinugawa River, elevated tram stops, river terraces, bamboo groves, academic zones, industrial parks, rapidly growing new towns, and a valley crossing with a 60‰ gradient.

Facilities include island platforms with two sides and four tracks capable of smooth acceleration and deceleration, transit centers with bus lanes, parking lots, and bicycle parking, all characteristic of advanced and convenient LRT systems.
By early July 2024, the total number of users is expected to reach 4 million, with plans for extension to the west side of the station.
Furthermore, the HU300 Series LRT vehicles received the 2024 Laurel Award, and further development is anticipated.

Utsunomiya Light Rail Co., Ltd. has authorized commercialization.
