■Following the shocking "Beethoven: Pathétique, Moonlight, Appassionata," this is the second album on Sony Classical by the Russian virtuoso pianist, Valery Afanassiev. It is an all-Mozart album dedicated to Emil Gilels (1916-1985), a renowned Russian pianist and Afanassiev's teacher, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year.
■This is Afanassiev's first recording of a Mozart sonata in 23 years, since Sonata No. 14 on Nippon Columbia in 1993. It includes Sonata No. 11, famous for its "Turkish March," Sonata No. 8 in A minor, one of only two sonatas in a minor key, and Sonata No. 10 in C major, known for its bright character.
■Afanassiev's teacher, Gilels, had a wide repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music. For the last 15 years of his life, he focused particularly on performing Mozart and Beethoven, leaving behind many acclaimed recordings. Therefore, Mozart sonatas, including the A minor sonata which Gilels excelled at, were chosen for this album.
■Hybrid Disc (SACD layer is 2ch)
