Kora Town, located in the Kotō region of Shiga Prefecture, has long been a production area for high-quality zelkova wood, and its carpentry industry flourished, leaving its mark on Japanese architectural history as Kora carpenters.The founder, Kora Bungo-no-kami Munehiro (1573-1646), served as the master carpenter responsible for the construction of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, the most magnificent shrine in Japan, which enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, under the supervision of the chief commissioner Ii Naotaka.The Kora mortar was made using the traditional techniques of the Kora carpenters and high-quality zelkova wood from the foothills of the Suzuka Mountains.
