This product is a 5.0 shaku (diameter: 275cm) red and white bicolor nodate-gasa (outdoor tea ceremony umbrella). It is the largest size in our lineup of nodate-gasa, offering a powerful presence. The photo also shows a green umbrella of the same size, but the basic design is identical.
This umbrella, a symbol of Japanese culture, is crafted by skilled artisans of Kyo-wagasa (traditional Kyoto umbrellas) over 100 years. This special wagasa is made by skillfully combining carefully selected materials such as Japanese paper and bamboo.
Formally approved by Japanese imperial family tea ceremony practitioners, nodate-gasa have historically been associated with outdoor tea ceremonies. Dating back to the Sengoku period, tea ceremonies were embraced during hunts and before battles. In 1975, during Queen Elizabeth II's first visit to Japan, a welcome tea ceremony was held at the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto, where a traditional nodate-gasa from Hiyoshiya was used.
Conveying traditional Japanese beauty and hospitality, nodate-gasa express the Wabi-sabi lifestyle, where Japanese people live in simple harmony with nature.
Originally made for tea ceremonies, nodate-gasa are now often incorporated into modern interior design, hotels, and high-end Japanese restaurants. They are also known as amulets to ward off evil spirits, and this umbrella remains a prominent feature in events like Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Aoi Matsuri, adorning processions with its magnificent red color.
Reflecting delicate craftsmanship and design, the Honshoku Nodate-gasa is available in four sizes for solid color models and two sizes for intricate bicolor patterns. This product is a red and white bicolor.
The Honshoku Nodate-gasa has a silhouette reminiscent of a bangasa (oil-paper umbrella), but in a larger form. The surface of the Japanese paper is coated with a vegetable oil called linseed oil and dried in the sun for waterproofing.
Customization options are available, including the insertion of names, family crests, logos, and unique color variations, making each piece truly special. Elevate your space with the timeless elegance of the nodate-gasa, a symbol of traditional Japanese culture and hospitality.
