About 100 years ago, during the Meiji era, the first generation, Kinehachi Suzuki, was engaged in the business of decorative armor (jindogu) for Gogatsu Ningyo (May dolls).Later, Kinehachi began crafting the actual armor (kabuto) for Gogatsu Ningyo, marking the start of authentic armor making.Kinehachi, a craftsman at heart, honed his skills through diligent practice, and combined with his innate talent, laid the foundation for what is now "Suzukine."
As the eras of Taisho, Showa, and Heisei have passed, materials and techniques have improved beyond comparison to Kinehachi's time, yet Kinehachi's craftsman spirit has been inherited from the beginning.Just as a parent's love for their child remains unchanged through time, we too uphold the teachings of the first generation "Suzukine," dedicating ourselves to armor making with solid techniques and passion.
《Heian Seihou》Heian Seihou is a prestigious armor workshop that has continued for four generations. They received the Special Award of the Prime Minister's Award at the National New Festival Doll Competition and the Outstanding Youth Skills Award from the Governor of Tokyo.They have continuously researched and studied armor and helmets preserved throughout Japan on every possible occasion, leading to their current achievements.They are also active under the names of armor master Yuzan and doll master Ichizo. Ichizo is also known as a popular doll master who creates the "Wanpaku Taisho" series.
《National Treasure: Akaito Odoshi O-Yoroi (Armor with Bamboo and Sparrow Metal Fittings, Armor of Bamboo and Tiger)》Preserved at Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara Prefecture, this is arguably the most famous among the armors designated as National Treasures.Intricate decorative metal fittings, based on bamboo, tigers, and sparrows, with added motifs of wisteria, paulownia, chrysanthemums, and butterflies, are placed throughout the armor. The large kuwagata (helmet crest) spreading widely above the head is truly impressive.The crimson silk lacing still retains its fiery red color, and its splendor is known as one of Japan's foremost examples.The large decorative metal fittings on the shoulder guards, featuring "bamboo and tiger" which give the armor its name, are particularly eye-catching.The humorous expression of the tiger, in contrast to the sharp eyes of the many sparrows, is also interesting. Numerous armor masters have used this National Treasure as a model, conducting research and presenting their interpretations to the world.
