What is Biwa Tea?
Biwa tea has been loved as a common people's tea since the Edo period.In the Edo period, it is said that biwa leaf tea vendors appeared in Kyoto and Edo, carrying boxes on poles called tenpyo-bou, walking through towns. It was popular to brew and drink it blended with biwa leaves, cinnamon (nikkei), licorice (kanzō), and other ingredients, especially during hot weather.
The roots of biwa tea originate from southwestern China. Old Buddhist scriptures refer to the biwa tree as "King's Tree" and the biwa leaves as "Muyu-sen" (Worry-Free Fan).By the Han Dynasty (around the 1st century BC), it was apparently consumed as biwa tea.

Roots of biwa in NejimeScenery of Nejime, Nakanoshima TownNakanoshima Town in Minami-Satsuma City, where Totsukawa Farm is located, is one of the leading biwa production areas in Japan. It is also known for its historical prosperity as an international trading port, with a Chinatown (Chinatown district).During the Sengoku and Muromachi periods (14th-16th centuries), the local lord Nene (Nejime) is said to have established a port at the mouth of the Ogawa River, initiating trade with Ryukyu, China, and Western countries (Spain, Portugal).Records indicate that Nene traveled as far as Fujian Province in China, suggesting that biwa trees, native to southwestern China, were brought from the mainland during that time and cultivated in Nejime.
How to enjoy "Nejime Biwa Tea"For tea leaves:Boiling methodPlace one tea bag (or one tablespoon of tea leaves) in 1 liter of water, bring to a boil, then simmer on low heat for 5-10 minutes. Keep the tea bag or leaves in the water until cooled for a stronger brew.
For tea bags:Using a teapotPour boiling water over one tea bag (2g) in a teapot and steep for about 3 minutes.*Note: Tea leaves cannot be used in a teapot.
