What is Biwa Tea?

Biwa tea has been loved as a common people's tea since the Edo period.
In the Edo period, it is said that biwa leaf tea vendors appeared in Kyoto and Edo, carrying boxes on poles called "Tenpyo-bou" and walking through towns. It became popular to brew and drink it blended with cinnamon (nikkē), licorice (kanzō), and other ingredients, especially during hot weather.

The roots of biwa tea trace back to southwestern China. Old Buddhist scriptures refer to the biwa tree as "King's Tree" and the biwa leaves as "Muyu-sen" (Worry-Free Fan).
By the Han Dynasty (around the 1st century BC), it was apparently consumed as biwa tea.

JFS-B Standard
The JFS-B certification encompasses food safety management systems (FSM), hazard control (HACCP), and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). It includes the 7 principles and 12 steps of HACCP and applies to food factories such as processed foods, confectionery, pickles, seafood, meat, tea manufacturing, and rice polishing. It streamlines second-party audits and reduces management costs across the supply chain.

100% Kagoshima-grown biwa leaves
The raw materials are biwa leaves grown in Kagoshima, which is blessed with abundant sunlight in the subtropical climate.
The leaves are cultivated in the natural environment surrounded by sea and mountains, enriched by volcanic soil.
All biwa leaves used are from Kagoshima, harvested after at least one year of growth.

This patented process extracts the full power of biwa leaves.
The process involves soaking the leaves in special water created with an original active water device made from stacked natural minerals, removing bitterness, then sun-drying, removing fluff, and roasting at high temperature to produce the distinctive flavor of "Nejime Biwa Tea."

Nejime, where Totsukawa Farm is located, is one of the leading biwa-producing regions in Japan. It is also known for its historical prosperity as an international trading port, with a Chinatown (Kōrindō) that developed as a hub.
During the Sengoku and Muromachi periods (14th-16th centuries), local lord Nejime built a port at the mouth of the Ogawa River and began trade with Ryukyu, China, and Western countries (Spain and Portugal).
Records indicate that the Nejime clan even traveled to Fujian Province in China, suggesting that biwa trees, native to southwestern China, were brought from the mainland during that time and cultivated in Nejime.

How to enjoy "Nejime Biwa Tea" (tea leaf type)
Boiling method
For brewing with a teabag or tea leaves

Put one teabag (or one tablespoon of tea leaves) in 1 liter of water, bring to a boil, then simmer on low heat for 5-10 minutes. Keep the teabag or tea leaves in the water until cooled for a stronger brew.

Teabag type
For drinking with a teapot

Pour boiling water into a teapot with one teabag (2g) and steep for about 3 minutes.

*Tea leaf type cannot be used with a teapot.

For drinking by just adding hot water

Place one teabag into a mug or a 250ml mug bottle, pour boiling water over it. You can also make it by placing the water and teabag in a mug and microwaving (600W for 90-120 seconds).
