KATO Private Railway and Third Sector Train
■ The Tokyu 5000 Series on the Den-en-toshi Line has already been in service for 24 years since its debut. At that time, common design adoption with other companies' vehicles was limited to cases such as third-sector railways converted from former JNR lines, subsidiaries of the parent company that conduct through-running with other private railways, or examples where train manufacturers introduced ready-made vehicles. It was a surprise at the time for Tokyu, the dominant private railway in the Kanto region, to introduce JR East's E231 series-based design vehicles.
Originally, the new series structural body, starting with the 209 series, was jointly developed by JR East and Tokyu Car Corporation (now J-TREC), a member of the Tokyu Group. Around the same time, Tokyu Car became a 100% subsidiary of Tokyu Corporation, which is not unrelated. This precedent led to the adoption of shared design vehicles with JR East by many private railways in the Kanto region, including Odakyu with the new 4000 series, Keikyu with the new 1000 series stainless cars, Sotetsu with the 10000, 11000, and 12000 series. Keio also began introducing vehicles based on the new 5000 series.
