TINARIWEN releases their latest album, their first in three years! With a career spanning over 45 years and their 10th album, "Hoggar," TINARIWEN, the pioneers of Tuareg music and Grammy Award winners, achieve both a return to their roots and evolution simultaneously. Against the backdrop of nomadic culture nurtured in the desert straddling the border of Mali and Algeria, they have fused political themes in Tamasheq language, syncopated rhythms, bluesy guitars, and uplifting melodies, earning global acclaim over the past two decades.
On this album, they present a more raw and powerful sound, deeply connected with younger generations of Tuareg musicians, centered around communal vocals and acoustic guitar, reminiscent of gathering around a desert campfire. Recorded with an emphasis on live performance in Tamanrasset, southern Algeria, where musicians of different generations gathered, the songs reflect both nostalgia (assouf) and the ongoing political reality.
The album is marked by many iconic moments, such as the collective vocals and sharp guitars on "AmidinimEhafSolan," the intergenerational duet on "TadAdounya," and the reunion of Ibrahim and Abdallah for the first time in 30 years. Furthermore, the participation of Jose Gonzalez and Sulafa Elyas, along with the introduction of female vocals, has further deepened the musical breadth and warmth.
"Hoggar" is a work that shows TINARIWEN's current position, lighting a fire for the future while fighting against a fading culture, and is a powerful and beautiful album that emanates an unshakeable presence like the desert massifs.
