And they are aiming for an even higher level. Their lyrical and musical vision is far removed from most hip-hop (though vision isn't necessary to gain wealth in the mainstream, as Puff Daddy and Master P proved), and it's precisely that aspect that forms the foundation of The Roots' music. Their second album, 1995's "Do You Want More?!!!??!", and its follow-up, 1996's "Illadelph Halflife," intelligently linked hip-hop to its predecessors, funk and jazz. The lyrics were also unique, possessing a critical edge that could be called post-nationalist hip-hop. On this album, "Things Fall Apart" (the title taken from Chinua Achebe's novel of the same name), the sextet presents a darker tone, but their musical innovation is undimmed. "If we have to be fed by the black man, we'll starve" - Denzel Washington's words, sampled from the film "Mo' Better Blues," open this album. This is not self-pity. Surprisingly many African Americans today wryly smile at the notion of "black unity." The Roots repeatedly emphasize this fact. Musically, it's their best work, including collaborations with guests. "Double Trouble" in particular, thanks to the contributions of Mos Def and Talib Kweli of Black Star, became an enjoyable track utilizing old-school techniques. On "You Got Me," innovative percussion appears as if to compensate for Erykah Badu's understated vocals, and even jungle beats with an organic style make an appearance. While most rappers are trying to indulge in anger, The Roots are trying to do something new. Product Description Usually ships within 48 hours.
