The groundbreaking innovation and musicality that anticipated the era from Japan's early rock and pop scene continue to influence many people across generations, making Kazuhiro Kato a once-in-a-lifetime musician.
In 1965, Kazuhiro Kato, then a university student, formed The Folk Crusaders with Osamu Kitayama and others. Their single "Kaette Kita Yoppirai" achieved Japan's first million-hit on the Oricon singles chart, which started in 1968.
After disbanding The Folk Crusaders, he pursued a solo career and in 1971 formed Sadistic Mika Band. In 1975, they successfully performed a groundbreaking concert in London. Furthermore, in 1971, he released "Ano Subarashii Ai o Mou Ichido" under the name "Kazuhiro Kato and Osamu Kitayama," which remains a beloved standard song today. After the Mika Band disbanded, he continued his solo activities and collaborated with many artists such as Takuro Yoshida and Mariya Takeuchi through production and songwriting.

The documentary film scheduled for nationwide release in May was conceived from the thoughts of Yukihiro Takahashi, who was alive when he was alive, and features behind-the-scenes stories of The Folk Crusaders' formation, which produced Japan's first million-hit, rare footage of Sadistic Mika Band's overseas performances and recordings, and anecdotes hidden within the "Europe Trilogy," considered a pillar of Japanese pop.
Additionally, the timeless masterpiece "Ano Subarashii Ai o Mou Ichido" was re-recorded. The film showcases the evolving image of this song, woven by musicians from various genres.
The project, directed, supervised, and produced by Hiromi Aihara, who previously worked on "SUKITA: The Moment of Artists Carved in Time" (2018) and "Sound House Melody-Go-Round" (2020).
Kazuhiro Kato's music documentary film "Tonovan: Musician Kazuhiro Kato and His Era" includes tracks from The Folk Crusaders, Sadistic Mika Band, solo works, and numerous songs produced by Kato as a producer, appearing in the film. Beyond just a soundtrack, it compiles the footprints of this extraordinary musician.
The bonus track features the first recording of "Ano Subarashii Ai o Mou Ichido - 2024 Ver." participated by Hiromu Takano, Ren Takada, Miu Sakamoto, Kōnosuke Sakazaki, and Osamu Kitayama, recorded for the film "Tonovan: Musician Kazuhiro Kato and His Era."
Additionally, a highly rare live recording from April 1973 at Kanda Kyōritsu Kōdō is also scheduled to be included.
