[50th Anniversary of The Royal Ballet Premiere – MacMillan's "Manon" Shines with Passionate Performances by Osipova & Clarke]

"Manon," alongside "Romeo and Juliet," is known as a representative work choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan. In 2024, marking the 50th anniversary of its premiere at Covent Garden in 1974, Natalia Osipova portrays a modern Manon with her exceptional physical ability and overwhelming acting skills, partnered by Reece Clarke, a principal dancer in his fifth year with Osipova, whose partnership continues to be refined. The dynamic choreography, which highlights the deep psychological struggles of humans torn between true love and wealth, and poverty, is captivating. Don't miss the supporting cast, including Alexander Campbell as the wild Manon's brother Lescaut, Mayara Magri as the alluring Lescaut's Mistress, and Gary Avis as the lecherous Monsieur G.M., all delivering outstanding performances. The music, a collage of Massenet's compositions by Leighton Lucas and others, sounds as if it were created specifically for this ballet. The orchestra, led by master ballet conductor Koen Kessels, performs with vibrant rhythms and sweet, melancholic melodies, greatly enhancing MacMillan's narrative ballet.
