【Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Royal Ballet’s Premiere — Osipova & Clarke Shine in MacMillan’s "Manon"】
"Manon," choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, is known alongside "Romeo and Juliet" as one of his representative works. In 2024, marking the 50th anniversary of its premiere at Covent Garden in 1974, the ballet features Natalia Osipova, who vividly portrays a modern Manon with exceptional physical ability and overwhelming acting skills, and Reece Clarke, her partner for five years now, whose partnership has become even more refined. The dynamic choreography highlights the deep human psychology torn between true love, wealth, and poverty.
Outstanding supporting cast performances include Alexander Campbell as Lescaut, the wild brother of Manon; Mayara Magri as Lescaut’s seductive lover; and Gary Avis as the lecherous Monsieur D.M. The music, collaged from Massenet’s compositions by Layton Lucas and others, seems crafted specifically for this ballet. The orchestra conducted by the renowned Cohen Kessels delivers lively rhythms and melodies filled with sweetness and melancholy, greatly enhancing MacMillan’s storytelling ballet.
