The critically acclaimed *The Pillow Book* by Singapore poet Jee Leong Koh is now out in an illustrated dual Japanese and English edition. Inspired by Sei Shonagon, a Heian period Japanese court lady, Koh interweaves lists, anecdotes, tanka, and haiku into witty, meditative essays. The Japanese translation by Keisuke Tsubono brings Koh's musings to a new audience. In this edition of *The Pillow Book*, Mariko Hirasawa's charming illustrations accompany Koh's reflections on life and the spaces he has inhabited. After being born and raised in Singapore, Koh studied literature at Oxford University and then Sarah Lawrence College. He now lives in New York City and has written four books of poetry, including *The Pillow Book*, which was nominated for the Singapore Literature Prize. English with full Japanese Translation.
From the acclaimed Singaporean poet Jee Leong Koh, based in New York City, comes his latest work and first Japanese translation, *The Pillow Book / Makura no Soshi* (a work nominated for the Singapore Literature Prize).
Inspired by Sei Shonagon's *The Pillow Book*, this volume is a collection of airy fragments that freely weave together Singaporean, Japanese, and American cultures with the author's own experiences and reflections, while mixing various forms and themes such as poems, essays, haiku, and tanka. We deliver a bilingual edition in English/Japanese, filled with charming illustrations by Mariko Hirasawa, featuring the poet's fresh sensibility woven into words that are sometimes soft and sometimes sharp.
------ "The year I turned 33, I moved to New York City. To find out if I am a gay poet. (From Jee Leong Koh, *The Pillow Book / Makura no Soshi*)"
