Kanda Matsunojo, a genius Kodan storyteller who has emerged like a shining star in the Kodan world, is also known as "the most difficult-to-get-tickets-for Kodan storyteller in Japan" and "the key figure in the Kodan boom of the first time in 100 years."
His storytelling and powerful performances draw listeners into the stories, even those with no prior knowledge of Kodan. The appeal of his passionate stage presence has made him incredibly popular not only among traditional Kodan and Rakugo fans but also with a wide range of audiences, regardless of age or gender. This 2-CD set (in a paper jacket) is fully packed with the charm of Matsunojo, who is currently on a meteoric rise, featuring three performances plus a bonus track with commentary by Matsunojo himself.
This will be Kanda Matsunojo's final work before he is promoted to Shinuchi and simultaneously inherits the prestigious name Kanda Hakuzan in February 2020.

◆ Same Kōshaku (Shark Lecture)
The story takes place on a passenger boat traveling from Hyogo to Osaka. The boat, which had been sailing smoothly, suddenly stops. The boatman explains that a large school of sharks has stopped the boat, and unless a human sacrifice is offered, all passengers will become shark food. The person chosen as the sacrifice is a traveling Kodan storyteller.
However, the storyteller has one condition in exchange for being the human sacrifice. Originally a Rakugo story, this is a unique performance by Matsunojo, where a Kodan storyteller narrates a lecture within the story.

◆ Shiodome no Shijimi-uri (The Clam Seller of Shiodome)
This is a heartwarming story about Nezumi Kozo Jirokichi, one of the "Tenpo's righteous thieves." Jirokichi hears from his younger brother, who now sells clams, that a kindness he showed at a Hakone inn three years prior has changed the fate of a young couple. Jirokichi ponders what to do.
His decision is to confess his own crimes. Among the many stories of Nezumi Kozo Jirokichi, this is considered an outstanding work.

◆ Kohada Kohei-ji
In the Hoei era, an unsuccessful actor named Kohei-ji is unable to perform on the Edo stage due to circumstances involving his wife. Kohei-ji sets out on a tour with other struggling actors. His wife, who has always disliked Kohei-ji, conspires with her lover to murder him.
After being killed, Kohei-ji returns as a vengeful ghost. This story has been adapted and performed in various forms in Kabuki, films, and other media.
