Roscoe Holcomb (1912-1981), a singer/banjo, guitar, and harmonica player from Daisy, Kentucky, USA, who captivated numerous artists such as Bob Dylan, the Stanley Brothers, and Eric Clapton, and exerted extraordinary influence. His high-pitched singing voice and hard-edged banjo playing evoke a sense of loneliness and severity, and are described as 'High Lonesome.' His musical talent, originally a worker, was discovered during the folk revival movement that surged in the late 1950s, attracting intense attention from young people interested in ancient and frontier music. This album is a best-of collection featuring 21 selected tracks from Holcomb's albums released on Folkways Records in 1961, 1965, and 1975. It is an ideal introduction to Roscoe Holcomb and Appalachian music.
