ぼくが大学生の時に、長新太「ちへいせんのみえるところ」を手に取ることがなかったら、絵本を作っていなかったと思う。
いまだにぼくは、この地平線の見える風景の中にいて、優しさや不安や笑いや寂しさや怖さや希望の風に吹かれている。
そう、まるでこどもの時のぼくがそうして立っているように。
ぼくが絵本を作る時は、必ず頭の中で一本の線を引き、そこからぼくの絵本の旅を始める。
やがて、その線は見えなくなってしまうが、 時おり顔を出してはこどもの時のぼくが「ちへいせん」を眺めて立っている。
いつか、ぼくの「ちへいせんのみえるところ」を描いてみたいと思っていたが、もしかしたら、この「こどもたちはまっている」が、そうなのかもしれない。
そして、この本を長さんに捧げたいと思う。
