The legendary 1966 Japan tour by The Beatles, now shrouded in myth, is commemorated with this highly anticipated new collector’s edition, celebrating the 55th anniversary of their visit in 2021. This edition features the latest digital restoration and editing of the original, surviving performances at the Budokan, surpassing previous releases in both audio and video quality.
The two CDs include complete recordings of the June 30 evening show and the July 1 afternoon show, including the opening acts. Notably, both performances are now fully remastered using the latest multi-track stereo technology, transforming the original mono recordings—originally only in mono—by digitally separating vocals and instruments into four tracks and reconstructing a real stereo sound. While previous attempts at stereo were pseudo or simulated, this upgrade offers clear separation, vivid stereo imaging, and a level of clarity that exceeds past releases. Additionally, the original mono recordings of the second half of each show are included in the latest remaster.
This is the first time that both performances, including the opening acts, have been fully remixed into multi-track stereo from original master tapes, providing a significant upgrade compared to previous editions, including the 50th-anniversary version.
DVD1 features newly restored footage from the original unedited masters supplied by the overseas partner label HMC, covering both performances. The original footage, which was dark and heavily red-tinted, has been digitally restored to produce a more natural and sharper image. Audio options include both the multi-track stereo remaster and the original mono source, allowing viewers to switch between them.
DVD2 contains documentary footage such as press conferences and news clips. The “ANTHOLOGY VIDEO VERSION” includes specially edited footage of the Japanese tour. The “COMPLETE PRESS CONFERENCE” recreates the legendary 50-minute press conference held at the Pearl Room of the Tokyo Hilton Hotel, combining existing video and photos with Japanese subtitles to document the bizarre exchanges of the time.
The “NEWS FILM COLLECTION” features newly discovered and archival footage from overseas agencies such as AP, Pase News, Reuters, and others, compiled into a newly edited 55th-anniversary version from 2021. This edition also includes rare documentary footage in Spanish, making it a must-see.
