Please note that all chusen dyeing is done by hand, so there may be individual differences in the degree of dye bleeding and color application.We hope you will appreciate these slight color variations or areas where the dye may not have fully penetrated as part of the charm of handmade dyeing.
[Starching]Using a stencil, a protective paste is carefully applied to areas where the pattern should remain distinct.This paste prevents the dye from soaking into the fabric, resulting in clear outlines for the pattern.
[Dyeing (Chusen)]Dye is poured from above using a tool called a "yakkan" (kettle).The poured dye thoroughly soaks into the fabric from the top to the bottom, creating a beautiful finish with no discernible front or back.The bleeding and subtle variations inherent in handcraft are also part of the chusen charm.
[Washing]After dyeing, the fabric is carefully washed in a water tank to remove excess dye and paste.This washing process settles the colors and creates a soft texture.
[Drying]The washed fabric is hung high and dried by natural wind and sunlight.The sight of the fabric gently swaying in the wind is one of the beautiful scenes unique to chusen dyeing.

[About the Artisan]Yumi Ishikita (Dyer)A dyer based in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. She creates dyed works that convey the warmth of handcraft, using motifs from daily life and natural forms. She expresses traditional techniques with a modern sensibility and has received high acclaim both domestically and internationally.
