Nanten, introduced from China during the Heian period, has been valued since ancient times as a medicinal plant to suppress coughs.
From late autumn to early winter, it produces shiny red berries, and its name, "Nanten," is read as "difficult to turn" or "nan-ten," which is associated with the wish to "turn misfortune into fortune."
Additionally, placing Nanten at the entrance is believed to ward off evil spirits.
An encyclopedia from the Edo period states, "Planting Nanten prevents fires," and many households planted it in inauspicious directions as a fire prevention measure, thus protecting the safety of the home.
