About the artist
*At Tobu Records, we have reissued many masterful performances by Georges Georgescu (1887–1964), a Romanian Electrecord original. The advice for these publications was kindly provided by his daughter, Ioana. She proposed the reissue of the studio recordings with the Czech Philharmonic as "the most sonically excellent performances" of her late father, using the Sprafon master tapes. Thanks to the selfless cooperation of King International, this is the first worldwide reissue using Sprafon master tapes, released on the 50th anniversary of his passing. The playback and mastering were handled by Takao Suga of the Suga Studio at the Kenkoku-dai, who ensured a perfect setup. Previously, the DANTE/LYS reissues from LPs were of poor quality, making the difference clear. For the Czech Philharmonic, this was the peak period overcoming post-war chaos (Tárich’s "My Homeland" was also recorded during this time), and the ensemble’s maturity is evident. Georgescu was deeply familiar with the Czech Philharmonic and frequently performed at the "Prague Spring" festival, showing excellent chemistry. His performances are highly acclaimed, with the lively rhythm of Beethoven’s Symphony No.7 being particularly pleasant. "Death and Transfiguration" was composed in the same era as Strauss and shares a stylistic approach closer to Strauss’s own expression than to Furtwängler’s. Georgescu highly valued the Romanian virtuoso Valentin Georgiu (1928–), who is still active today, and the interpretations of Rachmaninoff are also worth listening to.
