It is the end of the Edo period. Iiguchi Seibei (Hiroyuki Sanada), a low-ranking samurai in a small domain in the Shonai region, is nicknamed "Tasogare Seibei" (Twilight Seibei) by his peers because he always returns home immediately after work to take care of his two young children and elderly mother. He is a dull man. However, after saving his childhood friend Tomoe (Rie Miyazawa) from danger, his exceptional swordsmanship becomes known to the world, and he is eventually chosen by the domain to carry out an "joi-uchi" (revenge killing ordered by a superior).
Directed by master Yoji Yamada, who makes his directorial debut in a period drama, based on the short stories "Tasogare Seibei," "Take-hikari Shimatsu," and "Iwai-bito Sukehachi" by the master of historical novels, Shūhei Fujisawa. While meticulously recreating the historical context of the time, the film brilliantly embodies themes of modest family love, hidden romantic feelings, and dynamic sword fighting scenes.
