Tartan check refers to a multicolored plaid pattern with uniform vertical and horizontal stripe ratios, established for each clan and ethnic group in the Scottish Highlands.
Many color combinations use red, black, green, and yellow, and the number of colors that could be used was limited by rank and status.
It is also called breacan in Gaelic and is simply written as tartan or tartan plaid.
It is said to have served as a coat of arms to distinguish tribes, classes, and friend from foe in wartime, and in an era when literacy was limited, it was used to boast the ability to create fabrics with many colors.
Today, it is used worldwide as a material for fashion items.
