The history of Takaoka Doki (Takaoka Copperware) began in 1609 when Toshinaga Maeda, the lord of the Kaga domain, entered Takaoka Castle. When Toshinaga founded the town of Takaoka, in order to promote its prosperity, he summoned seven master casters, including Yaemon Kanamori, from Tonami District's Seibu Kanaya Village (present-day Tsuchide Nishi Kanaya, Takaoka City) in 1611 to the present-day Kanaya Town in Takaoka City. From there, the techniques spread, and the town came to be known as a casting town.
This is an Ashura statue from Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, an area historically known for its Buddhist altar fittings.
The Ashura statue is one of the Hachibushu (eight classes of non-human beings) that were enshrined in the West Golden Hall of Kofuku-ji Temple, along with the Shakyamuni Triad, Bonten and Taishakuten, the Four Heavenly Kings, and the statues of the Ten Great Disciples. It is a charming statue resembling a youth with three faces and six arms, but its torso and arms are very slender, and its characteristic feature is its pensive and devout expression. The expression of Ashura is thought to represent a figure quietly gazing into their own heart and repenting.
