鎌倉幕府の滅亡に始まる南北朝の動乱。北条一族の終焉、楠正成らの知勇が支える後醍醐天皇の新政権、足利尊氏の離反と南朝北朝の分離、室町幕府の成立……。数十年にわたって列島を揺るがした巨大な戦乱を記す『太平記』(全四十巻)。後世に深甚な影響を与えた書の古態を伝える室町初期の「西源院本」に、初の校注を加える。
◇ 太平記 (二)
元弘3年(1333)、後醍醐帝の綸旨を得て、足利尊氏は北条一族追討の兵を挙げる。新田義貞・赤松円心らが加わった倒幕軍の勢いは止まらず、五月、北条高時以下873人が自害、150年続いた鎌倉幕府は滅亡した。だが、京に戻った後醍醐帝の親政はやがてほころびを見せ、建武政権に反旗を翻した尊氏は、九州へ落ちる。
