ハミルトン・カーハートは27歳の時（1882年）に、最初のビジネスとなる衣料品の卸売業をスタートさせる。その2年後の1884年には家具や手袋の卸業会社
「ハミルトン・カーハート&カンパニー」を
米国ミシガン州デトロイトに設立した。
やがて1889年になると、
社名を「ハミルトン・カーハート・マニュファクチュア」とし、
わずか4台のミシンと5人の従業員でワークウェアの生産をスタートさせ、
最初のプロダクトとして丈夫なダック地とデニムで作られた
「オーバーオール」を世に送り出した。
これが今日まで続く「carhartt」ブランド誕生の瞬間となった。
