From 1999 to 2011, Sylvain Cambreling served as principal conductor of the Baden-Baden & Freiburg SWR Symphony Orchestra, and in honor of his 75th birthday, a 10-disc box set featuring many previously unreleased recordings from SWR archives has been released. Sylvain Cambreling, long-time principal conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, revitalized the orchestra’s sound. The set includes recordings from 1992 to 2016, covering his tenure with the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden & Freiburg (Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra), with only the Bartók Viola Concerto recorded with the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra. His repertoire from Berlioz to Messiaen is comprehensively represented. About 60% of the recordings are previously unreleased.
Especially known for his affinity with 20th-century music, Cambreling excels at expressing the complex, intense atmospheres characteristic of this era with elegance and rich color.
For example, he brings out vivid colors and subtle sensuality from works by Schoenberg and Berg, which are often associated with dull gray images. His ability to seamlessly blend Webern’s "Six Small Pieces for Large Orchestra" with Debussy’s "Six Ancient Epigraphs" is unique.
He reveals the intricate details of works like Bartók’s "The Miraculous Mandarin" and Janáček’s "Sinfonietta" with remarkable clarity, while also employing expressive shading. His interpretation of Stravinsky’s "The Rite of Spring" is elegant and non-violent, evoking pleasure.
