ロトの剣は全長約40cmで、伝説に忠実なフォルムになっています。
プレイヤーがテレビに向かって剣を振ると本体内蔵のセンサーがその動きを読み取り、タテ、ヨコ、ナナメ斬りなど、振り方によりさまざまなアクションを起こせるため、テレビ画面を見ながら、ドラゴンクエストの世界（アレフガルド大陸）を本当に冒険しているかのような気分で遊べます。
専用ハードなどは必要なく、セットの内容品だけで遊ぶことができます。
本体の「紋章ユニット」を付属のAVケーブルでテレビに繋ぎ、「ロトの剣」を振る、冒険に疲れたら「冒険の書」型のメモリーカードに保存。
