Although "Swan Lake" was a failure at its premiere in 1877, it has established its position as the most popular ballet since its revival in 1895. To borrow the words of Daniel Barenboim (Artistic Director and General Music Director of the Berlin State Opera), who conducted this production, "Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake' is a timeless masterpiece!" This choreography is based on the 1895 revival, but Patrice Bart has added a modern touch through his arrangement. Combined with the elegant costumes and stage design, it has become a very traditional and captivating entertainment for adults. Barenboim emphasizes the romantic beauty of Tchaikovsky's score. While polished ensemble dances unfold, Oliver Matz passionately portrays Prince Siegfried, and Steffi Scherzer embodies the beautiful fairytale heroine. The picture quality of this DVD is generally excellent due to squeeze recording, with almost no graininess. The middle and long shots are slightly soft-focused, which is likely a problem from the video recording and not a mistake in the DVD conversion. The Dolby Digital 5.1ch sound effects are integrated with the picture, effectively using the rear channels to create a sense of live performance. You will be reminded of the meaning of the word "realism." The only menu feature that can be called a DVD extra is a synopsis of the story. However, the accompanying booklet is quite substantial, offering not only a synopsis of the story but also commentary on Tchaikovsky and ballet music, performance explanations, and performer introductions.
