詳細説明
On paper, there's no reason to expect two young Nashville studio veterans--a songwriter for Marshall Crenshaw and a jingle singer and backing vocalist for Sixpence None The Richer--to end up, as Bill DeMain and Molly Felder have, "rather big in Japan". On record, however--this, their eponymous Western debut, is a bright-eyed summary of three previous Japanese releases--it's evident what their Eastern audience has a yen for. Like kindred retro-pop spirits Swing Out Sister and The (early) Cardigans, Swan Dive execute a stylish plunge into the heart of pop's breeziest, most summery latitudes. Inevitably, the reference points are the thundering tympani of Pet Sounds, soundtracks to 60s films starring hopeful, tender-hearted girls in geometric dresses, Burt Bacharach's signature strings which the irresistible "Rome Will Fall" shamelessly reproduces, and, as Felder's ice-cream voice melts around "Ordinary Day", the delicate melancholy of Tom Jobim. Despite occasional glimpses of the journeyman's formulae (the brassy "Circle" and "Moodswinging") and belaboured bohoisms ("Groovy Tuesday", as in Miss Weld), Swan Dive is largely lovely and mostly kitsch-free. Add in a skittering cover of Blondie's "Heart Of Glass", a guest spot from Jellyfish's Andy Sturmer and the artless aplomb of a sunshiny "Better To Fly" and wistful "Goodbye September", and it's clear that DeMain and Felder know exactly how to use a familiar palette to paint fresh pop magic. --Jennifer Nine
