------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------● Survival Foods® Supplements are "7-year long-term storage supplements" designed with emergency health considerations.---------------------------------------------------------------------
Foods distributed at evacuation centers during disasters are mainly processed foods with long shelf lives. Typical emergency foods include dried bread, canned bread, alpha rice, crackers, and sweets—primarily carbohydrates. During disasters, diets tend to lack fresh meat and vegetables, becoming carbohydrate-centric. Survival Foods® supplements efficiently help balance the nutritional deficiencies that occur during such emergency living conditions.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------● Three Key Points of Survival Foods® Supplements---------------------------------------------------------------------
POINT 1【Collaboration Between Disaster Prevention and Nutrition Experts】Recognizing the need for "delicious stockpile foods," Seienta Enterprise Co., Ltd., which has created Japan’s long-term storage food market for nearly half a century, collaborated with Healthy Pass Co., Ltd., a professional supplement manufacturer aiming to promote the development and dissemination of nutritional therapy. This is a long-term emergency supplement developed with the desire to maintain health as in daily life, even during disasters.
POINT 2【7-Year Long-Term Storage】Typical supplement shelf life is about 2 years. Since vitamins and minerals are micro-nutrients measured in micrograms (1 millionth of a gram) or milligrams (1 thousandth of a gram), their levels tend to diminish over time, and controlling this decay is very difficult. They are also very sensitive to moisture and heat, making storage at room temperature challenging. We have optimized packaging materials and vitamin/mineral quantities, conducted long-term storage tests over several years, and confirmed minimal nutrient loss. Ultimately, we succeeded in developing a supplement that can be stored for 7 years while maintaining sufficient vitamin and mineral levels for emergency use.
POINT 3【Designed as a Nutritional Functional Food to Meet Emergency Nutritional Needs】Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, research and studies on emergency diet and nutrition have advanced, with many findings presented at academic conferences. Based on these results and Healthy Pass’s extensive experience in supplement development, we designed the necessary nutrient amounts for emergencies, resulting in two types of supplements: multivitamin & mineral, and vitamin C.The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare provides reference nutrient intake levels for meal planning at evacuation centers. These include calcium, vitamin A, and iron to prevent deficiencies, and specific amounts for energy and key nutrients.Survival Foods® supplements are formulated as nutritional functional foods (containing vitamins B1, B2, C, and iron) designed with emergency health in mind.
These nutrients are based on the Japanese Dietary Reference Intakes (2015 edition), calculated using weighted averages from population data by gender and age group from the 2010 Census (Kumamoto Prefecture), considering the needs during disaster situations.Source: "Implementation of Appropriate Nutritional Management for Meal Provision at Evacuation Shelters" (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, June 6, 2016)
【What is a Nutritional Functional Food?】A food used to supplement specific nutrients, with the function of those nutrients indicated on the label. Nutritional functional foods are a type of health food that complies with safety and efficacy standards set by the government. For more details, see the Consumer Affairs Agency’s page on Nutritional Functional Foods.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------● Why Supplements Are Necessary for Disaster Stockpiling---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Balance of the Five Major Nutrients Builds HealthAn ideal diet for maintaining health is well-balanced among the five major nutrients: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, and vitamins. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are called the "three macronutrients" and supply the energy necessary for life. Fats, proteins, and minerals form bones, tissues, muscles, and blood. Vitamins and minerals support the functions of other nutrients and help regulate the body.
- Disaster Diets Are Carbohydrate-CentricVitamins and minerals are often deficient in normal diets, and deficiencies become more pronounced during disasters when emergency foods are mainly carbohydrates. Evacuation life or staying at home can last from about one month to half a year, and sometimes up to a year. It takes approximately one to two weeks for normal life to resume after logistics are restored.
- Imbalanced Nutrition Harms HealthOur bodies maintain daily health through nutrients obtained from food. Deficiencies in nutrients lead to health issues that appear as delayed symptoms. Prolonged deficiencies can impact overall health.
- Using Supplements During Emergencies Is EfficientTo correct nutritional imbalances during resource-scarce disasters, using supplements can efficiently restore nutrient balance. Survival Foods® supplements support health during emergencies and facilitate a smooth return to normal life.
- One in Ten People Are Starting to Stockpile SupplementsWhile stockpiling emergency food is common, how many consider nutritional aspects? According to a 2021 survey by the Consumer Affairs Agency, among 3,000 people aged 20–60 nationwide, the most common stored items were bottled water (83.9%), dried noodles or cup noodles (65.0%), canned foods (64.6%), and retort foods (56.5%). Among these, 11.6% (349 people) also stockpile supplements or health foods. This indicates that one in ten people has begun stockpiling supplements.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------● Frequently Asked Questions About Survival Foods® Supplements---------------------------------------------------------------------
Q1. Are there any ingredients that might cause food allergies?Survival Foods® supplements do not contain any of the seven specified raw materials required to be labeled as allergenic foods, nor do they include the additional 21 items recommended for labeling.
Q2. Since it is labeled for emergency use, should I avoid taking it regularly?Emergency situations are an extension of daily life. If you feel that your regular diet lacks vitamins or minerals, it is recommended to take these supplements regularly, even during non-emergency times.
Q3. Are Survival Foods® supplements manufactured domestically? All our supplements are produced in Japan at GMP-certified factories. GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards ensure products are made safely and maintain consistent quality throughout all processes, from raw material intake to shipping. Raw materials are sourced worldwide.
Q4. Do the supplements contain additives?Capsules and tablets labeled as supplements generally require additives for manufacturing. Survival Foods® tablets use only the minimum necessary additives: Maltitol, Calcium stearate, Fine silica, Cellulose, HPMC (Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose), Dextrin.
Q5. I have a family of four. How much should I prepare? (How many servings per box?)Each box contains 90 tablets. Taking 3 tablets per day per person, one box lasts about 30 days for one person. Since evacuation and shelter life can last from one month to half a year, it is recommended to prepare one box per person. To account for nutritional balance disruption during the first week after a disaster, consider that one box can serve four people for one week. It may be advisable for each household to prepare one box per person.
Q6. How should I store the supplements?Supplements are sensitive to direct sunlight, high temperatures, and humidity (such as in cars, bags, or near water sources in kitchens). Although we have improved storage stability, to maintain long-term storage, keep in a cool, dry place at room temperature (15–30°C, humidity 40–60%), away from direct sunlight. After opening, close the zipper tightly and consume as soon as possible. Also, avoid storing near water or in places where condensation may occur, such as near cooking areas.
